What is a Representative? What is a Senator?
Representatives
In Texas, state representatives serve specific districts across the state and represent people who live in their district at the Texas Capitol. There are 150 members in the Texas House of Representatives, and they help make state laws by introducing and voting on bills and resolutions. At the federal level, congressional representatives serve in Washington, D.C.
Senators
On the other side of the Texas Legislature is the Texas Senate. Texas has 31 state senators, each representing a larger district made up of several House districts. Like state representatives, senators introduce and vote on legislation that affects Texans statewide. At the federal level, each state has two U.S. Senators.

- A good way to find out if your representative aligns with your own views, and what they stand for is through the internet: looking them up on social media, googling them to see if they have a website, using opensecrets.org to track the money in U.S. politics to see who is funding your representative and who influences their politics, or the official state legislative website. This option is the best when trying to find out where your representative stands on a more personal level.
- Want to try and get a quick overview? You can also simply look up “where does [representative] stand on [subject]” and many great articles or government websites will pull up. If you don’t have access to social media or the internet, an in-person way to find this information is going to public events and town halls. This way you can personally hear from your representative themselves and sometimes get the chance to meet them.
